Yu Yuan has a history of more than 440 years. It is the biggest Jiang Nan Style Garden(江南园林) in Shanghai. It is so much full of Chinese traditions that it is famous across the world. It has been visited by numerous Chinese and foreign including British Queen Elizabeth II, Former American President Bill Clinton, Former Japan Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, Former German President Roman Herzog.

Yu Yuan was built in the year 1559, during the Ming Dynasty(明朝) by a Si Chuan Official Pan Yun Duan(潘允端). It was his private garden and was built for his parents. "Yu(豫)" has the meaning of peaceful and safe. The garden was named to bless his parents. It was renovated in 1956 and opened to tourists in 1961.

Yu Yuan is divided into 6 areas: Big Rock(大假山), Wan hua Lou(万花楼), Dian Chun Hall(点春堂), Hui Jing Lou(会景楼), Yu Hua Hall(玉华堂), Inner Garden(内园). There are more than 40 attractions in Yu Garden. The top attractions are:

San Sui Hall(三穗堂) is one of Yu Garden's main architecture. It was the center for financial and political activities in Qing Dynasty(清朝). The furnitures in this hall are all preserved since Qing Dynasty(清朝).

Yellow Stone Big Rock(黄石大假山) is the oldest, biggest and most beautiful rock in Jiang Nan(江南). It was piled up by a rock master in Ming Dynasty(明朝). It feels like really being in a mountain when inside this rock.

The Iron Lion(铁狮子) was made in Yuan Dynasty(元朝), which was earlier than the time this garden was built. It looks quite "real" and vivid and is one of the most ancient items in this garden.

There is a Gingkgo(银杏树) that is said to be planted by the first owner himself.

Dian Chun Hall(点春堂) was built in 1820 during Qing Dynasty(清朝). It was the headquarter of a famous revolution during 1853—1855.

There are a lot of read carps in the Hui Jing Pool(会景池). The crowds of red carps is a marvelous view.
