There are more than 40 cinemas in Shanghai, some of them are cheap and you know cheap cinemas are usually old and outdated. However there are also quite a few cinemas have nice decorations, cozy seats and are most importantly - equipped with recent audio and video technologies. Watching movies in these cinemas can be really enjoyable. These cinemas can usually be found in shopping malls, just like in other countries.

It usually is a little more expensive to watch a movie in these cinemas. Hot movies can usually cost 60 or 80 RMB for each person. Sometimes even more. There are a lot of time slots when they sell cheaper tickets though. Most cinemas sell tickets for half the original pirce after 9pm or 10pm every day, or Saturday morning, or Tuesday evening. Do check with them before you pay a full price!

It might be easy to find a good cinema in Shanghai. But it definitely is not so easy to find good movies in the cinemas. Sometimes you can not even find movies in English. Every month there will be usually around 10, or less, new movies in the cinemas. And usually less than half of them would be foreign movies. Hongkong, known as the Oriental Hollywood, is not making as many good movies as before. But Hongkong movies are still an important source of Shanghai cinemas. So most movies you can find in Shanghai cinemas are in Mandarin or Cantonese. Probably you don't want to watch these movies unless you want to practice your Chinese.

However, China does import foreign movies regularly. And most of them are of course from Hollywood. And the number of the imported movies could be up to 40 each year. What movies can be imported depend on if they can pass the inspections of China movie bureau. Some movies although passed the inspections, the nudity scenes or politics related scenes could be deleted. So sometimes the same movie you watch in China could be a little shorter thanin other countries.
