There are a lot of hospitals in Shanghai, to meet the needs of the huge population. It is obvious that not all of them could have good doctors and good equipments. Most hospitals in Shanghai are owned by the government. Only 24 of them are private and one of them is foreign.

The government owned hospitals fall into three categories: City/District/Street. The city-level hospitals are the best hospitals. Most of these hospitals have a department for foreigners called "外宾门诊". The doctors in this department usually speak English a lot better than in other departments. However, the cost in this department is a lot higher than other departments, although still much lower than foreign hospitals or clinics. If you have no language problem and have enough time, seeing a doctor in the normal departments costs way lower.

The procedures to see a doctor is kind of complicated. First you need to go to the the reception counter. You should tell them where your problem is. They will give you a piece of paper indicating which department you should go to. But before that, you need to go to the registration counter to pay the registration fee(挂号费), about 10-20 RMB. It usually takes a long time since there is always a long line. After the registration fee(挂号费) is paid, find the correct department and, usually, wait. After another long line, you can finally see the doctor. If he gives you a prescription, go to the madicine department to pay and get the medicine.
