For most time of the year, Shanghai is an extremely crowded city. But there is one exception, which is the Chinese New Year holiday. Statistics show that till yesterday, 6.15 million people have left Shanghai. This number includes the people who took
trains, buses and planes. Those who drove out of Shanghai were not included. So a lot more than 6 million people have left Shanghai!

Because so many people have left Shanghai, the traffic has been a lot better. There are also less people on Metro. According to Shanghai Metro statistics, there were 4.91 million people taking Metro on Friday, 20th, 1 million less than usual days.

Traffic surely is not the only thing that's affected by the leaving of so many people. A lot of small shops and restaurants have been temporarily closed during the holiday. This could bring some inconveniences to the people who are still staying in Shanghai.

An "empty" city may be a little bit exaggerating :) But Shanghai during the holiday is definitely much less crowded. If you can ignore the noises from the fireworks, the Chinese New Year is when you can enjoy a different version of Shanghai life. Happy
Chinese New year!
