For most time of the year, Shanghai is an extremely crowded city. But there is one exception, which is the Chinese New Year holiday. Statistics show that till yesterday, 6.15 million people have left Shanghai. This number includes the people who took
trains, buses and planes. Those who drove out of Shanghai were not included. So a lot more than 6 million people have left Shanghai!

Ever wondered how many "laowai" there are in Shanghai? Today Shanghai government sheded some light on this. According to their data from the year 2010, there are 208.3 thousand people living in Shanghai are from outside of mainland China.

Jean Tigana arrived in Shanghai, signed for Shenhua, said he was not here for money

Another one of the big moves for Shanghai Shenhua football club (上海申花) has come to reality. Jean Tigana, the 56 years old France coach, has arrived in Shanghai and signed a one year contract with Shenhua. At a press conference held last night,
Tigana said:"I felt fortunate that I did well during the transition from a player to a coach. I coached in places like England, Turkey, learned different cultures and ways of thinking. I think coming to China this time will be an exciting and wonderful experience."

Malfunctions, Delays, and even death, another messy morning at Shanghai Metro system
This year Shanghai metro system has seen quite a bit trouble. It's now the end of the year, and it seems trouble has not stopped coming yet. As early as 6am today, the epic "signal system malfunction" hit line 9, causing the whole line to be running

Hundreds of people waiting an hour for a free cup of 25RMB worth coffee
Wait an hour for a free cup of coffee, would you ever do anything like this? A lot of people would probably say no. But how many would be willing to do this in Shanghai? Well, the title already told about it.
The day before yesterday, a new coffee shop near Jing An Temple used this as a promotion method. From 12:30 to 13:30, anybody can get a "free" cup of Latte using his/her business as an exchange. The coffee was worth 25RMB.
It turned out to be a very succesful promotion, probably because the owner had spreaded out the news on the Internet before the promotion actually started. At about 12:20, there was a long line of about 300~400 people waiting for the coffee!

A middle class family tragedy -- Husband killed wife, then jumped off 7F, leaving their 20-month-old son orphaned
6am, Oct 11 2009, a loud thump woke up quite a few people in Wenhua Garden residence compound. They soon found there was a body lying on the ground close to a car with some indents. Apparently he jumped off the building and then hit the car before he landed on the ground. It was Mr.Zhou who lived on the third floor in building 36.

Strong bad smell in Zhang Jiang

Around 2pm today, some quite pungent smell started spreading out in Medicine Valley (药谷) of Zhang Jiang Hi-Tech Zone (张江高科技园区). Some people who were close to the origin of the smell soon felt a little nauseate and sick. The news propogated very quickly. Lots of companies, although not many of them are really close to the origin of the smell and were not really in the reach of the smell, decided to let all the people stop working and leave Zhang Jiang as soon as possible. There are however still many companies who did not want their operations to be interrupted. Many employees in these companies started wearing masks.

Four hours from Shanghai to Beijing by train by 2011

Recently Shanghai railway bureau reported that the high speed railway between Shanghai and Beijing will be completed by 2011. It will take only four hours then to reach Beijing from Shanghai. Now it takes even 12 hours for the express trains which do not stop between Shanghai and Beijing.

Tallest building race in Lu Jia Zui
The Oriental Pearl TV Tower(东方明珠电视塔) had been the tallest building of Shanghai for many years since it was built in 1994. It is 468 meters high. In 2008, Shanghai World Financial Center (环球金融中心) was built and became the new tallest building. Its height is 492 meters. However, this record is not going to be held long.

Istan retreating from Middle Huai Hai Road

Rumors came true. Istan(伊势丹) on Middle Huai Hai Road(淮海中路), one of the first foreign department stores in Shanghai that has been operating for more than 15 years, will be closed at the end of 2008. The evacuation from the building will start from Dec 14 and Dec16 will be the last day of Estan Middle Huai Hai Road.

Herbicide leak causing air in multiple areas smell pungent
Lots of residents in multiple areas of Shanghai smelled something pungent in the air. A few people actually felt a little sick after smelling that and went to hospital. The smell lasted a few hours and then faded away.

The old town Zhu Jia Jiao does not charge for entry fee any more.
Zhu Jia Jiao (朱家角) is the closest old town to urban Shanghai. Other old towns like Zhou Zhuang(周庄), Tong Li(同里) or Xi Tang(西塘) are a lot furthur away. Recently the administration of Zhu Jia Jiao has decided to stop charging for entry fee any more.

Slovakian artist Roman Ondak stops showing his works on Biennale
2008 Shanghai Biennale opened 9/9/2008 in Shanghai Art Museum. It attracted a lot of visitors and looked like going to be a succesful show. But something unexpected happpened just two days after the opening. Irritated by visitors writing and painting on his work, the Slovakian artist Roman Ondak decided to quit the Biennale with his work. The area where used to be his work has been empty and sealed.
