METRO is a hypermarket from Germany. They started in Shanghai in 1996. Their business models are different than other hypermarkets like Carrefour or Lotus. Membership is required to enter. And they charged for plastic bags right from the beginning, while other hypermarkets did not do so until China government forbade providing plastic bags for free in 2008. With these limitations to their patrons, METRO still managed to make a stand and be popular within certain patrons. I would guess the reason is the stuffs they provide. Some of them are imported and can not be easily found in other hypermarkets.
