Online Shopping in Shanghai
First of all, there are very few English online shopping sites in Shanghai or even China. So the best way to enjoy online shopping in Shanghai is to learn reading Chinese or have some one who knows Chinese beside you. Online shopping is becoming more and more popular in China, due to the fast growth of express delivery services in China: there are a lot of companies way cheaper than FEDEX.

Taobao - 淘宝
Taobao is just like EBAY, a c2c shopping site, which means most stuffs on the site are from other users of the site. You can find almost everything on Taobao, and probably at a tempting price. Since the deal happens between two individuals instead of buying from a shop, Taobao utilizes Alipay(支付宝) to secure the whole process. The payment is first made to Alipay. Then the seller should send out the goods. The buyer get the goods, check if they are good and then tell Alipay to finally make the payment to the seller and the whole process is done. If the buyer find something wrong with the goods, he/she may request to get the payment back instead of paying to the seller.
Alipay is a nice tool and it works quite well. But it also makes the whole process quite complicated while securing it. If you are not good enough at reading Chinese, it is not suggested to try Taobao. But if you are, it can be a lot of fun surfing in Taobao.
