The Inner Ring Road, as an arteial ring road in the urban areas, has brought a lot of improvements to the terrible traffic of Shanghai Urban. However, the number of cars in Shanghai is increasing with an incredible speed. Jams are happening more and more on the inner ring! The need for another arterial ring road is increasing. The middle ring is being built to meet this need.

As you can probably tell from the name, the middle ring is between the inner ring and the outer ring. The urban area of Shanghai has expanded over the last couple of years. And the middle ring is only a little away from the inner ring. So within the middle ring is mostly the urban area of Shanghai.

Most of the middle ring is already functioning, while some portions are still under construction. The whole length of the middle ring will be 70 kilometers long. Unlike the inner ring, which mostly consists of elevated roads, the middle ring consists of ground roads, tunnels, underground roads and elevated roads.

The middle ring goes through following areas: Hong Qiao(虹桥), Cao He Jing Hi-Tech Zone(漕河泾技术开发区), Zhang Jiang Hi-Tech Zone(张江高科技园区), Bi Yun International Community(碧云国际社区), Jin Qiao(金桥), Wu Jiao Chang(五角场).
