The outer ring is at the rim of Shanghai. Most of the outer ring is in the suburban area of Shanghai. The whole length of the ring is 99 kilometers and it took ten years to finish the ring. Unlike the inner ring, which is mostly elevated road, the outer ring road is mostly like freeway.

Xu Pu Bridge(徐浦大桥) and the outer ring tunnel(外环隧道) connect the Pu Xi part and the Pu Dong part of the outer ring. The outer goes through or near the following areas: Wai Gao Qiao Free Trade Zone(外高桥保税区), Xin Zhuang Industrial Area(莘庄工业区), Hong Qiao Airport(虹桥机场).
